Green Kitchen Cabinets

What do green kitchen cabinets mean? Normally you perhaps think about painted kitchen cabinets when you hear about green cabinets.

Green Kitchen Cabinets

You may obviously paint your kitchen cabinet green if that enhances the looks of your kitchen. That of course is not what green cabinets are all about. Cabinets made of environment friendly material are also called green cabinets. These basically do not place additional burden on the environmental resources and do not pollute the air inside.

Kitchen cabinets made of particleboard or fibreboard is created from a formaldehyde resin called carcinogen. These emit formaldehyde gas and coming in contact with heat these become more toxic.

Formaldehyde exposure may result in watery eyes; burning sensation in the eyes coughing; vomiting; and irritation in the skin.

The dark timbers used in black kitchen cabinets are normally made of wood that is not grown responsibly. These are not made from harvested wood thus actually put strain on the ecological resources.

Paints are often used as cheap alternatives for refacing kitchen cabinets. The cherry kitchen cabinets, which are bright in colour, are normally painted or stained. These do not have low VOC finishes.

All sorts of chemicals are used to transform your kitchen cabinets to give them the desired look. Red kitchen cabinets look great and are available in sleek finishes. Consider the amount of chemicals used to get the finish. The process starts with a coat of cleaner which is made of ammonia, then these are polished with chemicals and finally coats of paints are sprayed to it.

If the above bothers you then you should perhaps start to think about selecting green kitchen cabinets for your house. Finding a green cabinet is easier today. More manufacturers are now building greener products. So your choices for getting your desired style within your budgets are ever increasing.

Stainless steel kitchen cabinets are free from toxic material and are one of your best bets.

If you are to use wood then look for cabinets made or what or straw board. Do not be worried about the strength of these boards, these are tested to be stronger that particleboards.

You may also choose other green materials, which include bamboo and formaldehyde free plywood and MDF. Bamboo is durable and appealing to the eye. It is also quickly renewable. It can grow-up in less than half the time the hardwood trees take to reach the market.

The other options can be to use recycled wood or wood that is harvested responsibly.

Recycled wood cuts down deforestation and is normally acquired from salvaging wood. Older kitchen cabinets are often left unused or discarded. These if made from solid wood can be recycled to create great looking cabinets.

It is not hard to locate kitchen cabinets that have been built with minimal levels of formaldehyde or even no formaldehyde. Be sure to choose green wood or materials that are durable.

They should at least provide fifteen to twenty years of service before needing replacement. If green kitchen cabinets do not last long, they cannot be called green. So be careful about making the green choice.
