Distressed Kitchen Cabinets

A traditional and classic look is provided to the kitchen when you use distressed kitchen cabinets. Presenting things, making them appear as old or worn is an art form better known as distressing.

A variety of techniques are used to age wood.  They include hand scrapping and wire brushing which gives the wood the worn and torn look that is normal with aging. If you use antique wood they are naturally distressed. With new wood, you will need to give it the antique look. You can either purchase distressed stock items from manufacturers or with some imagination do the distressing yourself.

To distress new wood you will have to make it appear aged. Start by creating patchy looks by removing layers of paint. Your patches should now have different colours and some may even show the wood. Try to be as imperfect in your job as possible. The goal is to create a country look that appears aged.

This technique makes your cabinet appears shabby at the same time stylish and elegant.
Sandpaper of varied crudeness will be required. You will also need some brushes and light coloured paints.

Use some hard tools like screw drivers to gauge the wood, hammer it to create dents. Refer to the kitchen cabinet kits section for more info on the equipments you will need. To darken areas use varnish.

Apply antiquing paints on top and the patches. Use thinners with paints that will create lighter shades, which will add to the aging look. Sand selected areas once the paint dries. The kitchen will show the wearing look!

You will need to choose two colours one that will form the outer layer and the other will be underneath the topcoat. If you do not know which colours to use, browse some sites on the net or glance through some home improvement magazine for ideas. Also take a look at my painted kitchen cabinets section and you will know what I mean!

Distressed kitchen cabinets are light on your pocket too. These can be classified, as cheap kitchen cabinets as the budget to create these are low. If you already have a kitchen cabinet you just spend a small sum distressing it. Even if you are purchasing a new one, as you will be distressing it you can buy plain cabinets, which are cheaper.

You can also do some salvaging work on your existing kitchen cabinet. Salvage kitchen cabinets can then be given distressed looks. These normally are already worn out, so giving them the distressing look would be easier. You need not waste your time and money giving it the stressed look that you want.

Reclaimed kitchen cabinets are generally made of wood that is normally aged. You give your kitchen a cosy look using reclaimed wood. These being antique often fit houses with rustic or country home décor. The lovely iron knobs for kitchen cabinets on the doors will add to the rustic look.

When remodelling your kitchen cabinets, you should keep in mind the style and cost. Distressed kitchen cabinets create a style that is warm and welcoming. Further these are affordable kitchen cabinets that can substantially cut your costs. Distressed or reclaimed wood is not as costly as regular wood.

Distressing as we have discussed above does not cost much- It is more of a creative art. When you have finished distressing enjoy your creativity and craftsmanship!
