How To Paint Kitchen Cabinets

How to paint kitchen cabinets? Your kitchen cabinets are normally battered over a period. Their shabby appearance can be blamed on your handling and the cooking environment. It may seem to you that replacing your kitchen cabinet is unavoidable.

How To Paint Kitchen Cabinets

Painting your kitchen cabinets can refresh the looks of your cabinet. Knowing how to paint kitchen cabinets can cost you much less money as compared to replacing them.

Even if you get discount kitchen cabinets they will cost you a fortune. Add to that the installation and shipping charges and you may be way ahead of your budgets. The quality of the new cabinets may also be lower than the ones you already have.

If there are structural problems with your kitchen cabinet or if they are of poor design then may be replacing them is your best option. Painting kitchen cabinets can work miracles if you find that the dents and scratches are restricted to the surfaces.

Before starting on learning the procedure on how to paint kitchen cabinets get inspirational ideas from home improvement magazine and websites. These will help you decide on the colour, look and finish.

Start the process by cleaning your cabinets. Make sure that all the areas that you have decided to paint are completely wiped free of dirt, grease and scum. Remove the doors before you start the process. Use a decent quality cleaner to clean them and then let them dry.

Before painting old kitchen cabinets you should sand the wood. Do not sand them with all your strength but complete the job by lightly sanding them. Sanding the cabinets will allow the primer to settle in.

You should now apply primer. The primer gives you a better bonding with the surface of the wood. The paint when applied on the wood has a lesser chance to rind or break off when it crashes with your utensils.

If you are repainting kitchen cabinets using the same colour as your old cabinet you may leave the priming stage. Apply primer on stained cabinets to envelop the wood grains. Unless you do that the paint you apply will not stick to the surface properly.

Use oil based primers if you will be painting your cabinet with oil based paint. A shellac-based primer should be used if you will be using latex paint. These primers have a strong scent and it is advised that you ventilate the room properly before applying them.

After sanding and priming you need to start painting your kitchen cabinets. For painting wood kitchen cabinets you can use sprayers to get a uniform and lustrous finish. In case you do not have a sprayer you can do the painting using paintbrushes.

Start by applying thin coats of colours. Do not try to paint thick coats of paints. If you want a great and durable finish you need to give repetitive coats of paints.

Let the first coat dry off before applying the second. You may sand the first coated surface once more if you want to give a professional finish. That makes the surface smooth to accept the next layer.

Two coats of paint are normally enough, but at times you may need to apply a third coat.

Always let the earlier coat dry fully before applying the new coat. Do not forget to choose a colour that will complement your kitchen.

Once the doors are dry attach them back to the kitchen cabinet. That is all about how to paint kitchen cabinets.

Are you amazed with your handiwork? You should be!! Enjoy the bright and fresh look of your kitchen cabinets.
