Painting Old Kitchen Cabinets

You may modify the kitchen flooring, repaint the walls, replace the kitchen cabinets, renovate the countertops or even change the kitchen hardware to give a fresh look to your kitchen. Painting old kitchen cabinets serves the purpose best.

Painting kitchen cabinets are low cost substitutes compared to high budgeted kitchen remodelling projects. It is easy to add new flavour to your kitchen cabinets and change the dreary look of your kitchen.

If you are interested in do it yourself projects, this one is for you to show your mantel. Remember this will take some time to complete. For painting old kitchen cabinets you will need different tools of the trade.

If you want ideas on how to paint kitchen cabinets continue reading below a basic overview and some tips. Apart from paint, you will need primer, brush, sandpaper, scrubbers, dry cloth, liquid cleaners and water.

The better you prepare your kitchen cabinet for painting the better the results will be.

Depending on the material with which your old cabinets are made, you will need to decide on the painting technique.

If you have wood cabinets depending on the quality of the wood at the time of painting you may decide either to paint it or stain it. If the wood grains are still clear a coat of stain can perhaps be a better idea.

If you have metal cabinets, depending on the texture of the metal, you will need to decide on the paint. Remember painting will cover up the entire texture.

Check whether your old cabinets need repair work. Get the cabinets repaired before you paint them. If there are structural defects take professional help. However if you find that that the defects are on the surface like grooves or dents you need not worry.

Start by dismantling the kitchen cabinets. Remove the doors, drawers, shelves etc from the cabinet. If you have glass doors remove them too.

For painting wood kitchen cabinets start with cleaning the surface. Use cleaners, soap, water and scrubbers to clean the surface. Let the cabinets dry once you clean them.

The grooves, dents will be clearer now. You need to apply putty on them and allow that to dry. Sand the surfaces using quality sand paper to smoothen the surface.

Apply primer to the sanded surface. Depending on your choice of paint select the primer. If you have selected oil based paints use oil based primers. You may also select latex primers. Allow the primer to dry off completely.

The actual process of kitchen cabinets painting starts now. Start applying thin coats of paints using good quality brushes to all surfaces, including interiors. Let the paint dry.
Inspect your job and you will need to apply another thin coat to get the desired effect.

You may apply varnish over the paints to make the surfaces water resistant. Fasten all the elements that you had dismantled to complete the procedure of painting old kitchen cabinets. The finished product should give a complete new look your kitchen and environment. Bask at the glory of your creation.
